Molokai Lead Up

Today we did a relax run on the Maliko. More like a cool day roll the shoulders over from the Naish Maui race in the weekend. We were join by Riggs Napoleon on the OC1 Jeremy Riggs, Ali and a few other on the run.

Before the run Photo shot of us both

Bit closer

I thought I would have a break from putting on the Go Pro so gave it to the Mex i Can to have a go.

Half way through the run The Mex I Can fell out and knocked the Go Pro chest plate and it fell off his body.

This is what came next

The Beautiful Clear Water of Maui

This is The Mex I Can diving down to get the Go Pro

The face of relief!!!

We ferry over to Molokai on Thursday a day early than what we had booked but it is cheaper to get over on the ferry and it is also easier to get the board over that way.

Moore Water Time

We made through the first day and what a day, nice to get in the water and get the first paddle out of the way, now time to get rested and ready for next two weeks of playing YEEEW.

Crashed early last night only to wake up at mid night and sit in the dark buzzing not sure why but the beer at 1am seemed to do the trick.

The morning brought plenty of things to do organize a ride to the Sic factory pick up a board organize another board for PJ and anything else that may pop up.

Ali from the Golidie was kind enough to come pick up the boys and hook us up with some wheels to go pick up the new weapon one word SIC.

Thanks to the guys at the factory cherry job stoked to be on one of your bench mark boards.

After that we headed back to Kahului to get ready for our first Maliko run.

It was fun in the shuttle bus thanks to Kelly from moorewatertime.com for providing such a great service is always good to be hanging with like minded people frothing to go do what we do YEEW.

The funniest thing was when we came over the rise at Hookipa the van went from bustling noise to silent when we all saw the ocean and the bumps from a great angle I will be sure to get photos on the next run.

The run whilst fun was not all time but was a great way to get the bugs out and get on the water and try the new stick.

All in all a great day and a good start to the Hawaii adventure will update again in a couple days with footage from some run.

Where it starts

Well it's on the Blu I Mex c Can and I are off after months of training and getting to know one another HAWAII here we come ready and willing for some good times and plenty of ocean time.

With the day starting with a quick last visit to Al at the chiro and a quick visit to Crossfit Noosa to say thanks to both for the support and help in the build up it was down to TBIMCC place.

With a quick dash down to Brisbane with Mumsie mex c can we managed to make our way to check in where we were mistaken for a honey moon couple (you would be so lucky Jonsey) hahahahahaha not really just one of those funny moments you have with people.

Luckily we had both done Esta I mean do our Esta (Us immigration stuff) so all good and to my surprise Mexcan is actually an Aussie and not just a Mexcan trying to get to the land of opportunity.

After clearing security (apologies about the glove incident Jonesy) we managed to discuise our selves as cooperate boofheads and sneak in to the Qantus lounge and proceed to eat like kings.

One thing I must mention is that I do believe we have set a new luggage record with us only checking in 13kg of gear between the two of us paddles included shit I hope Jonsey knows how to work a washing machine or we are not going to be overly good company.

Yeeeeeew currently heading to Sydney will talk again soon

The Blue Eyed Mex C Can got us a spot on the Local News - any way to get our little adventure out to the locals is always good publicity.

Getting your wings

The weather has changed heaps in two day - from cold nights to warm days to just bloody cold.

The final training session before heading over to Hawaii I got to spend some quality time with my son Taj. Since Scotts Head he has been amping to come with me either for a surf or even a training session. He is still developing his strength but if he is in the right spot at the right time he can drop into some of the bigger waves.

We spend most of our practice time at the River Mouth so it was only to fitting that Taj get his wings here. After getting a flogging on a set wave he made it out the back to catch his breath, spot a pearler, turn & go. This is the kind of stuff that brings a tear to a dads eye the first over head wave your boys gets and I got to share it with him.

Anyway he made the drop, bottom turned then got hit by the lip the best thing was be came up smiling.

Awesome work Taj

Yeew!

Enjoy the stoke with your kids

Coreban Quick Tip - Small Stuff

One of my regular paddles when the wind is working is a Peregian Beach to Sunshine Beach ruffly around 10km, average time is 54 mins.

This was a 10knot of wind with a good little bump running. Working on the small stuff helps you in the bigger stuff. Working on catching the small bumps to help build your speed for the bigger traveling bumps.

Look in front of you NOT behind!

Does Length Matter

With all the conversations, blogs and forum messages over the years, one of the most common questions that still flies across our desk is “what height should I make my paddle?”

Well for the most part, during the early days of SUP everyone would automatically instruct the student to simply do a “shaka” or paddle 6-8 inches higher than your head. Great advice especially for the early stages of entering into the sport as a novice. But what about as you improve and want to start pushing the limits and having a paddle that allows progression.

I still believe that personal preference is key to success but at the same time not to let this mindset restrict your thinking when testing new boards, fins, and especially paddles. What size blade, what angle, how much concave in the blade, flexibility of the shaft all important ingredients when choosing the right paddle and then the big question - Does length really matter?

In SUP racing it has been proven that the Personal preference relative to your body height will assist in a more efficient stroke but let’s zone in on wave riding and see what options we have.

For the most part the 6 inch rule above your head is great but next time you get bored and want to mix up your style, try something different and shorten your overall paddle length. (Generally, depending on your paddle and the way it was assembled you can take a heat gun and soften the 2 part epoxy that binds the handle to the paddle shaft. This will loosen the handle and allow you to cut the shaft and re-attach your handle –
watch You tube on how to assemble paddle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbohfvE_GXU .

Remember once you cut it there’s no going back so a good suggestion is to test out lengths on an adjustable paddle that allows for variation).

Initially cut shaft down to head height and reattach handle. The shortened height in itself will require a bit of getting used to, so be sure to shorten in increments. As you adapt to the shorter paddle, lower overall paddle height to about nose/ mouth height or 6 inches below the top of your head. Even though I have personally been using at this height for some time now and adjusting my style accordingly, keep in mind that initially it will take a bit of adapting and also making a mental note to drop your arms when paddling to allow for a stronger stroke.

Overall the pros of a shorter paddle seem to outweigh the longer option for wave riding especially in smaller waves. Quicker paddle transitions, more efficient tube riding, laybacks on the paddle, and more control while riding a wave as the blade is now closer to your body. Try it out, experiment and see what works best for your style and most of all get out there and enjoy the ride.
